First time volunteering?

What advice would you give to people who are getting started as a volunteer?

If you’re thinking of volunteering but don’t quite know where to start, ask yourself the following questions to see what type of volunteer activity is right for you:

  • If you had all the human and financial resources in the world, what problem would you solve, what would you change, or what would be your personal contribution? Your answers will show what matters most to you.
  • How much time do you want to spend volunteering? Are you looking for a regular, weekly commitment or a one-time, short-term activity?
  • Do you prefer to work alone or with other volunteers?
  • Do you want to work from home or at the offices of an organization?
  • If you prefer to volunteer away from home, what would be the ideal place for you? Would you like somewhere close to your home, to your workplace, or to your children’s daycare centre?
  • Do you have specific skills or talents that you would like to share with an organization?
  • Are you interested in acquiring a specific skill?
  • What are your personal goals? Do you want to re-enter the job market? Do you want to meet new people?
