Respite home support volunteers needed to provide stimulation to children with chronic neurological disorders and/or developmental disabilities and to provide respite for their parents. Key responsibilities: volunteering with an assigned family with a child with a disability at the family’s home. The volunteer organizes meeting times, provides psychosocial support to the child through play and various activities and submits an activity report to the volunteer coordinator every month. Qualifications: eligible candidates include individuals with experience with children who have the ability to speak English and/or French and who pass a criminal history record check.

Friendly visits are one-to-one visits where volunteers can take residents for a walk, read to them, listen to music, share stories, etc. Note: urgent need for German-speaking volunteers.

Volunteers with a dog, or other well-trained and calm animal that is used to people, are needed to visit with seniors living in the residence.

Client preference is for a friendly female volunteer who is able to prepare varied meals that are nutritional and palatable and can help tidy up the kitchen. Knowledge of Hungarian is also an asset.

Volunteers needed, especially Gujrati- ou Laotian-speakers, for friendly visits to individuals who have a mental illness and who reside in foster homes. Volunteers will receive two half-days of training on topics pertaining to geriatric substance abuse. Qualities required: ability to listen, empathy, perseverance, patience, and enthusiasm. The organization is especially encouraging people with First Nations heritage to volunteer in order to better respond to the needs of this community.

The volunteer needs to have a sensitivity towards individuals with mental illness, an ability to relate to them and good listening skills.

Requirements: good people skills, bilingualism, have two to four hours to give, attend training and provide a police check.
