Students volunteering
I have very little free time. Can I still volunteer?
Yes, it is possible to do volunteer work for short-term activities (festivals, sports events or fundraising). It can be for a few minutes per day (phone calls to the elderly), a few minutes per week (web site update), or as much as you wish.
Can I volunteer in my occupational field?
It depends what field you work in. It is easy for those in the health, information technology, education and translation fields to find volunteer opportunities. For notaries, engineers, biochemists, and others, it may be more difficult.
Volunteer work experience could very well become an important part of any curriculum vitae : it enables you to gain or develop a good number of occupational skills .
Why should I volunteer?
There are many good reasons to volunteer:
- Support a cause in which you believe (environment, literacy, integration of new Canadians...)
- Meet surprising new people
- Acquire work experience
- Find out about community resources
I would like to volunteer, but I don't know where. What should I do?
You can contact the Volunteer Bureau of Montreal (514.842.3351) to make an appointment with a placement counselor who will be able to help you find a volunteer position corresponding to your interests. Interviews are scheduled Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., in our downtown offices. We could also redirect you to another Volunteer Bureau, closer to you.
At the end of the meeting, the counselor will give you the contact information for one or more non-profit organizations that need your services. It will then be up to you to contact the organization that will make you want to get involved !
Can I stop volunteering at any time?
Yes! Volunteering is a personal choice, you can stop anytime you want. However, certain organizations will ask for a commitment of three to six months, particularly if they provide you with training.
