Who we are
The Volunteer Bureau of Montreal's mission is to promote volunteerism to the general public and to provide support services to community organizations using volunteers.
Promoting volunteerism is the basic mandate of all volunteer bureaus, but there are many ways of going about this. The VBM has two priorities: recruiting volunteers for community organizations and helping anyone who wants to volunteer find the appropriate activity. When all's said and done, the VBM makes "matches" between organizations in need of volunteers and volunteers in need of a place to help out!
Community organizations are the main beneficiaries of the Bureau's other services, which include volunteer management workshops, volunteer fairs, a newsletter, consulting services, and so on.
In addition, the Bureau has a special role to play as the Volunteer Food Services Central Office for the Greater Montreal area, providing support services to an affiliated network of a hundred Meals-on-Wheels groups and Lunch Clubs for seniors.
Founded in 1937, the Volunteer Bureau of Montreal was Canada's first volunteer bureau and celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2012. It is a past recipient of the Prix Hommage bénévolat-Québec and of Centraide of Greater Montreal's Agnes C. Higgins Award. The VBM also managed the Christmas Index, a Montreal tradition begun in 1919, from 1969 through 2013.
