The Volunteer Bureau of Montreal (VBM) offers a range of specialized activities in volunteer management : training sessions, workshops, conferences... These are open and accessible to everyone, particularly those working with volunteers.

The Essentials of Volunteer Management:

The VBM has developed several training programs in volunteer resource management: The Essentials!

This series of four complementary workshops focuses on the development and strengthening of a volunteer program in line with current contexts. It covers the basics of volunteer resource management and aims to support volunteer managers in fulfilling their responsibilities.

Volunteer action has changed significantly in recent years, and our recruitment strategies need to adapt if we want to attract attention and recruit volunteers.

you looking to launch or revitalize your volunteer recruitment? Do you need to review the different steps to do so? Would you like to update your tools to make your offers appealing and impactful?

After this training, you will be able to:

- Define three recruitment strategies

- Identify the elements of an effective recruitment message

- Develop a recruitment strategy

Now that your recruitment is complete, new volunteers are ready to join your organization.

Good supervision will increase the loyalty and retention of your volunteers, while also uniting the staff and volunteers around your values and mission!

Managing volunteer resources is a constantly evolving skill. This workshop allows us to explore how to supervise and support volunteers from their first days through to their retention.

After this training, you will be able to:

- Identify the links between volunteer needs and the supervisory tasks of managers

- Describe the tasks related to effective orientation, integration, and training of volunteers

- Implement the five functions of supervision

- Discover key tools for volunteer retention

The selection and screening are two very important steps in your search for volunteers. 

The main objective is to ensure that your organization’s needs and your volunteer’s motivations align well.

This practical workshop will encourage you to reflect on your current processes and provide an opportunity to assess the risks associated with your activities.

Following this training, you will be able to:

- Define your organization’s duty of care towards volunteers and service users

- Evaluate the limitations and benefits of background checks

- Identify the risks associated with a volunteer position and the practices that can mitigate those risks

- Apply the 10 steps that ensure effective volunteer selection and screening.

Managing a team of volunteers can lead to problematic situations, such as conflicts between volunteers and misunderstandings between staff and volunteers.

If these situations persist, they can have detrimental effects on the services and programs offered.

This interactive training aims to provide a valuable opportunity to gather insights on conflict prevention and management in a volunteer context, as well as a space for reflection and solution-seeking.

Following this training, you will be able to:

- Identify the most common sources of conflict

- Implement preventive measures to minimize opportunities for conflict

- Apply problem-solving and conflict management tools

- Reflect on recent challenges you experienced and develop an action plan to manage conflict in your context.
